Through Thick Mud and Rough Trails: How Long Do ATV Tires Last?

For every off-road enthusiast on earth, there is always the need for a heavy-duty ATV tire. ATVs, or all-terrain vehicles, are made of low-pressure tires, a seat for the operator, and handlebars for steering control. They are extensively used in agriculture because of their light footprint and speed.

Some sportsmen and off-trail enthusiasts also know the importance of good ATV tires. But with all the thick mud, dirt, rocks, and rough trails, how long do ATV tires last?

Knowing how long ATV tires last

While it is important to make sure that the components of ATV tires are of good quality, it is also vital to determine how long a good ATV tire will last. With all the rocks, sharp objects, and heavy terrain that the ATV tires go through, you would think that they might last for only a short while.

To determine how long ATV tires last and  determine their quality, read reviews or ask people who have tried different models of ATV tires, and read buyer’s guides. It is also important that you know how to maintain and repair an ATV tire so you can continue along your journey when you experience a flat tire.

How to choose a long-lasting ATV tire

It makes sense to believe that bigger tires last longer, are more durable, and are more powerful. But most experienced ATV drivers understand that the bigger the mud tire, the more power they need to move it. Therefore, do not go buying huge tires.

Manufacturers have made ATV tires that suit from casual to hard core off-road riders. There is a wider variety of ATV tires now compared to before. Some of the popular ATV tires are the AMS Swamp Fox, CST Wild Thang, EFX Motoboss, and more.

Repairing ATV tires

ATV tires can last long when you know how to maintain and repair them. Fortunately, you can easily and effortless fix a flat tire. It is one of the less difficult problems of ATV tires. The most common problem with ATV tires is an air leak which leads to flat tires.

For flat tires, first you need to determine where the leak is coming from. You do it by putting air inside the tire and/or looking for an object stuck in the tire such as glass, nails, screws, and sharp rocks. If you find nothing, you slowly rotate the tire and listen for any leaks.

For fixing a hole in a flat tire, you need tools such as a plug insertion tool, tire pump, tire plugs, a reamer, air gauge, tire repair glue, and air gauge.  Once you find the leak, roughen the edges of the holes with the use of the reamer. Then thread the plug by putting a small amount of glue to the plug. Then make sure that the plug stays in the spot.

Learning to repair an ATV tire can take some time. If you are not sure about what you are doing, refer it to a professional. When you learn more ways and techniques on fixing and maintaining ATV tires, then you can make your tires last for many years.

Safety issues with ATV tires

Did you know that the production of ATVs was stopped during the late 1980s? This was due to safety concerns that the three-wheel vehicles were more unstable than the four wheelers. After the 10-year ban, the manufacturing and marketing of three wheelers began again.

The use of ATV on roads and streets is illegal in some states of United States, Canada, and Australia, although in some countries, ATVs are street legal. They have been around since 1893 when Royal Enfield built and sold the first powered quadracycle. It has also been used in military purposes. Today, it is widely used for farming and off-road adventures.

ATVs and ATV tires are meant to last long. They do not wear out easily and are sturdy enough to withstand any kind of trail and terrain.
